Should your loudspeaker be portable?

Thanks to our latest technological developments Teufel systems are becoming lighter and more compact, making them easier to transport. This makes the biggest advantages of these speakers, their ability to be easily integrated into and situation. There is also a range of speakers for outdoor usage. All speakers vary in structure, performance, and setup.

Or are you looking for a surround set for your home?

Enjoying the sound of a real movie theatre at home in your own home theatre - for many people, this wish is the beginning of their home theatre planning. Surround speakers are part of this because they take care of the sound effects that make a film experience so rousing and lively. An optimal surround sound merges into a unity with the picture and allows you to immerse yourself in the action. With good home cinema systems, the effect speakers are joined by the centre speaker, which reproduces dialogues clearly.

No? You're looking for a stereo speaker or set for your home.

The classic stereo loudspeakers has maintained its favour over the years. The acoustic principle behind the speakers still pervades in today's digital world. Active stereo speakers are now a new trend, where the amplifier is built directly into the speaker saving on space.

Soundbars: Sound masters on the TV

Despite the clear sound deficits of even the most expensive Smart TVs, many people shy away from purchasing a home cinema system with five or more loudspeaker boxes, amplifiers and subwoofer. The objections to a 5.1 system for the living room are usually "too space-consuming", "setting up and aligning is too complicated" or "the technology is too visible". None of this applies to soundbars. The slim multi-talents with Bluetooth, HDMI, AUX input and optical digital input require a minimum of space, are easy to install with the right cable and transform your room into a sound oasis. Soundbars from Teufel can create a virtual surround sound that can hold a candle to "real" complete systems. You can get most soundbars with a matching subwoofer directly in the set at a favourable price or upgrade them with a subwoofer at a later date. In addition, many of our soundbars support the integration of Effekt loudspeakers (one speaker on the left and one speaker on the right in the rear listening area). By the way, most of our soundbars already come in a set with integrated wireless function fn for fewer cables and more freedom. Check out our top sellers, such as our soundbars with radio or our mini soundbars fs for smaller and larger rooms, and let yourself be enveloped by really good sound.

Bluetooth speakers: Best sound where you are

In addition to our popular Bluetooth headphones, our Bluetooth speakers are also versatile, practical and ideal for wireless transmission of your favourite music. The manufacturer-independent wireless standard connects your portable or stationary Bluetooth speaker of all available sizes, as well as party speakers with a powerful subwoofer, wirelessly with your Bluetooth-enabled transmitting devices. Extra smart speakers like our HOLISTEN even listen to Amazon Alexa out of the box. The connection between Bluetooth devices is established in seconds. Speaker boxes of this type are the perfect all-rounders in terms of sound, hands-free talking and tone in pretty much any situation. Speakers with IPX protection class protect the valuable inner workings from splashing water or rain and can even be submerged with you if the IPX class is high enough. This way, the right Bluetooth speaker offers you the highest possible flexibility. How about a home office by the lake?

Smart Speaker

No need to worry about tangled cables: Smart Speakers & WIFI speakers do not require any superfluous cables, but only a power source such as the power socket at home. Additional devices such as amplifiers or preamplifiers are not necessary. Wi-Fi speakers and smart speakers allow you to easily stream your music via app control or voice command. Streaming speakers therefore eliminate the need for additional playback devices such as CD players or MP3 players, as all music is transmitted via your Wi-Fi network.

Thanks to such speakers, you can control your music wirelessly anywhere in your flat or throughout the entire house. Audio streaming allows you to transmit music via Wi-Fi to devices that can receive it. These can be hi-fi systems or loudspeaker boxes. The question of the right music format becomes superfluous because Wifi speakers from Teufel support common formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, ASF and others. This allows you to send audio signals from your smartphone, tablet, computer or TV wirelessly to the speakers. From compact micro speakers to three-way systems for extreme precision and the best sound, you're sure to find the sound generator of your taste. For clear highs, harmonious mids and clean deep bass.

Loudspeaker test reviews

We think we already know that our loudspeakers are good and that they are well received. After all, we develop most of this ourselves. But it's even better when the quality of our systems also appeals to others. This makes a large number of very good test reports about our products all the more gratifying. Over the years we have won a number of test victories and readers' votes. Quality simply prevails in the long term.

You've always wanted to know what's behind the terms and designations of the audio world? Then take a look at our audio glossary. Here you will find a short and concise explanation of, for example, bi-amping, bi-wiring, impedance and ohms.

  • How does a loudspeaker work?

Basically, a loudspeaker has the task of converting alternating current into sound waves. This is done by causing a diaphragm to vibrate through a coil and a magnet. When the alternating current flows through the coil, it is magnetised and attracted and repelled by the built-in permanent magnet. The frequency of the incoming alternating current determines how fast the voice coil and the membrane attached to it move. This is how the pitch is determined, as the diaphragm causes the air molecules to vibrate at the respective frequency, thus generating sound waves. Such devices, which transform alternating current into sound waves, are also called sound transducers. This basic principle is implemented in various forms.

  • Which loudspeaker drivers are available?

Generally, a distinction is made between the woofer, midrange and tweeter, whereby the name says it all: the tweeter reproduces the high frequencies, the midrange the medium function is made between the woofer, midrange and tweeter, whereby the name says it all: the tweeter reproduces the high frequencies, the midrange the medium frequencies and the woofer the low frequencies. Depending on the loudspeaker, the tweeter and midrange may well be fused into a single component. You've probably heard the term "low-mid" in speakers with a 2-way system. This is because the woofer in 3-way speakers only emits low frequencies, while in 2-way speakers it also covers the midrange.

  • What types of speakers are there?

Generally, a distinction is made between floor-standing speakers, bookshelf speakers, surround speakers, front speakers, centre speakers and effect speakers. For a stereo setup, for example, you don't need surround or effect speakers or a centre, but only two floor-standing or shelf speakers and optionally a subwoofer. In a 5.1 home cinema system, again, there is a centre and two front speakers in the front listening area and two surround speakers in the rear listening area. The subwoofer can be placed anywhere, although there are tips on how best to locate it. Compact speakers should also be mentioned. These are active speakers that are designed as stand-alone speakers and do not require additional speakers or amplifiers.

  • What subwoofer variants are available?

When you hear the word subwoofer, you will come across various designations. These usually refer to the types of construction and the different acoustic processes.

    • Closed or bass reflex: These are cabinet designs. Bass reflex boxes have an additional opening and are designed to amplify the bass in certain frequency ranges. The acoustic principle behind this is called the Helmholtz resonator.
    • Downfire or frontfire subs: This is about the direction of radiation of the diaphragm. You can already guess from the terms that with downfire the diaphragm radiates towards the floor and with frontfire towards the front. The downfire sub opens up new possibilities in terms of placement - for example, it can fit under the sofa.
    • Active or passive subwoofer: Since subwoofers are larger anyway, they can accommodate various components. With active subwoofers, the amplifier for the sub is housed in the cabinet. One of the advantages of this is that it can be controlled wirelessly by the receiver.
  • How do I set up a 5.1 home theatre?

In a 5.1 set-up, the front speakers are set up in stereo tradition (distance to listener = distance between the left and right speaker) next to the TV at equal distances to the left and right respectively or mounted on the wall. The use of stands automatically ensures an optimal height of the front speakers.

The following applies to wall-mounted or shelf-mounted speakers: The installation height should be between 40 centimetres and 1.20 metres. If the height is outside this range, you can also angle the front speakers slightly up or down in the direction of the listener's position. It is important that the centre and front speakers are approximately on a straight line, possibly also on an arc slightly curved towards the TV/screen.

The centre speaker must be positioned as centrally as possible below or above the screen. Only then do pictures and sounds form a unit. If the centre is placed outside a height of between 40 centimetres and 1.20 metres, it should be angled slightly upwards or downwards toward the listener.

You can find more practical installation tips in our big guide.

  • Which is better: active speakers or passive speaker casing?

In terms of wattage and sound, you can use both passive and active floor-standing or bookshelf speakers. Active speakers have the advantage that the amplifier is already integrated and you, therefore, see less technology. If you decide to use passive speakers instead of active speaker systems, you should pay attention to the ohm number, because the impedance is important to match if you want to connect an external AV or stereo receiver with passive floor-standing speakers.

  • Can I listen to music with a home cinema system?

The sound of a home cinema set is acoustically different from a stereo set. Nevertheless, it is possible to listen to music via a 5.1 sound system, only that the sound can then be heard from every direction, so to speak. At a concert watched on DVD or Blu-ray, this can be quite advantageous because the musical instruments and other sounds come exactly from the direction where they are played and the subwoofer provides crisp low frequencies. However, in order for all speakers to play during music playback, you need to make the appropriate setting on the AV receiver. Most models use the "All Channel" stereo function for this purpose. But Dolby Pro Logic II or Upmix (stereo) can also be used for this.

  • Which AV receiver matches the speakers I want?

If, for example, you want to buy new loudspeakers in addition to an existing amplifier, you must first compare the power of the two. The wattage or the RMS value (Root Mean Square) is decisive. Otherwise, you may experience sound problems or damage if you connect a much too powerful amplifier with high output to a weak speaker with a low wattage - or vice versa. You will find the corresponding information on the cabinet or in the operating instructions.
